What Works Best for Book Marketing for New Authors?

I recently published my first book and have been exploring book marketing for new authors, but there seem to be countless strategies to choose from. For writers who have experience with book marketing for new authors, what approaches produced the best results? Did building an email list, connecting with readers on social media, seeking reviews, or attending events make the biggest difference? I'd appreciate honest experiences and serious suggestions.

For aspiring authors, it's especially important to understand what truly attracts readers, rather than simply generating a lot of activity.
A lot depends on the genre and the audience. For example, social media and niche communities might work well for one book, while events, collaboration with bloggers, or getting early reviews might be much more beneficial for another.
